Account Deletion and Requests

On the internet, and forums in general, the policy on whether a request for account deletion is upheld, depends on the reasons.

If having an account puts your job at risk, upsets friends and family, or if your personal details have been shared against your will, then we would obviously respect any choice to delete an account. Anything that is going to negatively affect your personal or private life, we will help out wherever we can.

The reason that a policy like that exists (as opposed to just deleting every time) is because of the effect it has on forum content, and the general atmosphere, especially to a small forum like ours.

To see threads dotted around with 'deleted member' or 'Guest' as the OP, doesn't look great. It also makes people question what has happened to the person who made the posts, it could be the staff trying to make it appear there is more traffic that there actually is. Then we have to deal the aftermath of members asking what happened and the rumour mill goes into overdrive.

There's also the chance that the choice to leave was made in the heat of the moment, a decision that you end up regretting. I can think of three examples off the top of my head, where members left suddenly following small disagreements. They usually delete all their messages and avatar then ask to delete their account.

If you don't want to be here, just log out and don't come back until your ready. Cleaning up crap because of a childish tantrum is no fun for anyone.

If you're purely here for self promotion and don't get the attention you crave (like I said, we're small), or any other petty reason, account deletion will be refused from now on.

For someone to come here and make it appear as though they're happy to be part of DZ, crack jokes, make new threads, and interact with us, only to decide that there wasn't enough of a reaction for him to want to stay, smacks of egotism. If you're only here to try and exploit our good nature by pretending to be our new best friend, just to boost your social status, and then ask us to delete your account because 'there isn't much point posting', shows what a self centred asshole you really are Whitey Deleted Member.

If members have a genuine problem, we'll always respect the choice to leave, or even help you make a new identity. For the butthurt and selfish, it's not a given.
